Thunderstorms in the Southeast caused significant disruptions for travelers, particularly those flying with Southwest Airlines. The airline cancelled and delayed dozens of flights between Houston and Florida due to the severe weather.
Travelers hoping to kick off their spring break getaways encountered disruptions as Southwest Airlines experienced a rise in flight delays and cancellations. The airline attributed the issue to thunderstorms impacting the Southeast region and Air Traffic Control (ATC) limitations around Florida.
Flight tracking service FlightAware reported over 1,400 cancellations and delays across the country.
According to Southwest Airlines, approximately 160 flights were cancelled on 9th March, 2024. The airline is working to rebook passengers and get them to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible. Southwest Airlines issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and attributing the disruptions to the weather. They emphasized their focus on getting passengers safely to their destinations while maintaining operational efficiency and customer service.
The impact wasn’t limited to Houston-Florida routes. Travelers from other states flying to Florida also faced issues. Jacky Valles, traveling from El Paso with her family for a cruise in Miami, experienced a flight cancellation and rebooking for the next day. After waiting for hours at the airport, they fortunately secured new flights to Orlando, ensuring their cruise participation.
The weather also affected United Airlines, with some cancellations and delays reported for flights to Florida.
