Sisir Adhikari, not to contest from Kanthi, West Bengal, his traditional Lok Sabha seat. The reason give is old age.

Suvendu Adhikari’s father, Sisir Kumar Adhikari, a senior BJP leader and the former Union Minister of Rural Development during the Manmohan Singh administration, has decided not to contest the upcoming elections for the Kanthi Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal. This decision is attributed to his advanced age, reflecting a pragmatic approach to his participation in the electoral process.

Historically, the Kanthi Lok Sabha seat was under the influence of the CPI(M) until 1999, when Trinamool’s Nitish Sengupta secured victory against its candidate. Subsequently, Sisir Adhikari triumphed in 2009 against CPI(M) politician Prasanta Pradhan and in 2014 against Tapas Sinha.

Sisir Kumar Adhikari’s political journey underwent a significant shift in 2021 when he departed from the Trinamool Congress, a party to which he had been loyal for 23 years. His decision to join the BJP was motivated by his removal from key positions within the TMC, such as the chairmanship of the DighaShankarpur Development Council and the presidency of TMC’s district unit.
